Are You Experiencing Severe Dry Mouth?

Dry mouth, also known medically as xerostomia, occurs commonly from medications, dehydration, infection, and tobacco. One of the best ways to treat dry mouth is to understand the root of the problem however if it’s something you can’t prevent, there are ways to relieve the issue or at the very least provide some temporary relief. Below, we’ve listed effective ways to do this.

Limit Your Caffeine Intake

If you find yourself drinking multiple cups of coffee every day, we highly recommend trying to lower your daily caffeine intake to reduce mouth dryness.

Increase Your Water Intake

Another great way to improve mouth dryness is to increase water intake as much as possible. Although there is a limit on how much water you should drink, the limit is very high, and it’s unlikely you’ll even get close to reaching it. Touching on the last point, if you are regularly consuming caffeine, you should already be consuming more water than usual. Increasing your water intake is a surefire way to assist with mouth dryness, as hydrating is critical.

Purchase Sugar-Free Gum and Candies

One of the most effective ways to aid dry mouth is by chewing sugar-free gum or sucking on sugar-free candies. These are known to stimulate the flow of saliva and increase production.

Try a Mouthwash or Other Products Designed for Dry Mouth

Another great solution to dry mouth is to opt-out for mouthwashes and products that contain alcohol. By using products that are alcohol-free, (and commonly will note that they are designed for dry mouth), you will have some temporary relief at least.

Visit Your Dentist At Least Twice a Year

By regularly visiting your dentist for check-ups and cleanings, you are reducing the likelihood of dry mouth and other mouth and tooth-related conditions. They will also be able to detect and treat any issues they see, as well as provide you with additional tips and information on how to prevent them.

If none of these tips help with your dry mouth issue, it is important to seek assistance from a medical professional on the next steps you should take. The cause of your dry mouth could be from something else, and potentially more serious. If you are seeking long term relief, discuss your symptoms, diet and routines with a dentist today to understand if there is an underlying issue. Contact us today to speak with a professional.
