The removal of a tooth (known as an extraction), is sometimes the only option that’s possible when faced with a badly decayed tooth. When we can, we try to salvage a tooth with a filling, crown, or other restorative treatment, but in times when the tooth is in such bad condition that it can’t be repaired, an extraction is necessary. In cases like this, Yazdani Family Dentistry provides a full range of extraction options from a simple single tooth to wisdom teeth removal.

Types of Extractions

There are both surgical and straightforward (simple) types of extractions. A tooth that is impacted below the gum line typically requires a surgical extraction. Patients are provided with a local anesthetic to ensure they are as comfortable as possible during the procedures. For a tooth that is visible, a dentist will loosen the tooth and remove it following a step-by-step process.

When is it Necessary?

When decay has reached down into the tooth or if an infection has destroyed a large portion of bone, an extraction is often necessary. An impacted tooth or crowded teeth can cause a number of issues, including pain and inflammation. They are also more difficult to clean which can lead to decay and infection more easily. Through X-rays and other methods, we can determine if the tooth can be preserved or if it needs to be removed. In other cases, such as extreme tooth decay, damage, or injury, this can also impact the structure and stability of a tooth, forcing it to be removed. Before we decide, our team considers all relevant treatment options to see if we can preserve the tooth instead.
